5-Amino-1MQ inhibits nicotinamide N-methyltransferase (NNMT), an enzyme that plays a central role in adipose tissue biology, nicotinamide metabolism, and the cellular NAD+ pool. NNMT expression is elevated in obesity, which is why researchers are so interested in what happens when its activity is dialled down. Note that despite often being grouped with research peptides, 5-Amino-1MQ is actually a small-molecule quinolinium-based inhibitor — not a peptide.

5-Amino-1MQ is at an early stage — almost all the data is preclinical, with no large-scale human trials yet. It's primarily used as a research tool to probe NNMT biology in metabolic and ageing studies.
