BPC-157 has accumulated a preclinical literature few peptides can rival for breadth. Derived from a sequence identified in gastric juice, it has been investigated across an unusually wide range of injury models — gastrointestinal, tendon, ligament, muscle, bone, vascular and neural. That breadth is both the compound's defining feature and the most common criticism of its evidence base, since the literature remains overwhelmingly animal-based.
Mechanisms of Action
BPC-157 is a synthetic pentadecapeptide corresponding to a partial sequence of body protection compound isolated from gastric juice. Research describes upregulation of vascular endothelial growth factor receptor 2 signalling and associated angiogenesis, modulation of the nitric oxide system, and effects on growth hormone receptor expression in fibroblasts. Studies report influence on collagen organisation and fibroblast migration in tendon models, and on the gut–brain axis in gastrointestinal work. The peptide is documented as unusually stable in gastric conditions relative to comparable sequences.
Research Status & Findings
A large but almost entirely preclinical body of work, concentrated in rodent injury models and heavily weighted toward a small number of research groups. Human data are minimal.
